Kloridutveksli, also known as chloride exchange, is the reversible exchange of chloride ions on a solid ion-exchange phase with other anions present in a solution. It is a subset of ion exchange, most commonly studied with anion-exchange resins or clay minerals that carry fixed positive or negative charge sites capable of swapping ions with the surrounding water.

In anion-exchange systems, resin beads or mineral surfaces carry fixed positively charged sites. When a solution containing various anions passes through the material, ions such as nitrate, sulfate, carbonate, or bicarbonate can be exchanged with chloride ions that are bound to the exchanger. The general exchange reaction can be written as R–Cl + A− ⇌ R–A− + Cl−, where R–Cl represents the exchanger and A− represents the target anion. The efficiency depends on factors such as ion charge, size, concentration, temperature, and the exchanger’s design and conditioning.

Applications of chloridutveksli include water treatment and purification, where chloride exchange is used to remove undesirable anions from water or to selectively recover specific ions. In practice, resin beds are regenerated when they become exhausted of their exchange capacity, typically by flushing with a high-concentration chloride solution (for anion exchangers) to restore chloride to the exchanger and release the captured anions into a waste stream. Similar principles apply to natural soil systems, where chloride can participate in anion exchange with soil surfaces, influenced by soil type, pH, and competing ions.

Limitations and environmental considerations include resin fouling, limited capacity, and the handling and disposal of spent regenerant brines. Proper management is required to minimize waste and potential ecological impacts.
