Kloorisuolojen, also known as chloride salts, refer to a class of inorganic compounds composed of a metal or nonmetal cation bonded to one or more chloride anions (Cl−). The most common example is sodium chloride (NaCl), but the family includes potassium chloride (KCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), and many transition metal chlorides such as iron(III) chloride (FeCl3). Their general empirical formula can be written as MXnCln, where M represents the cation and n denotes the stoichiometric ratio necessary to balance charge.

Physically, chloride salts are typically white crystalline solids that are highly soluble in polar solvents such as water. The solubility varies with the nature of the cation; for example, sodium and potassium chlorides are highly soluble, whereas heavy metal chlorides like barium chloride have lower solubilities. Many chloride salts melt at relatively low temperatures, and some, like sulfuric acid conjugated with sodium chloride, can form azeotropic mixtures that influence distillation processes.

Clorid salts are employed across diverse industrial sectors. In the chemical industry they act as reagents, catalysts, and intermediates in synthesis routes for polymers, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. In food processing they serve as preservatives and flavor enhancers (e.g., table salt). They also play a role in metallurgy, where chloride ions are used to decompose oxides and extract metals. Calcium chloride is widely used for de-icing roads and maintaining road safety in cold climates, as it lowers the freezing point of water and rapidly melts ice.

While useful, chloride salts can pose health and environmental challenges. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of chloride ions can lead to corrosion of metal infrastructure and pose irritant risks to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. In aquatic ecosystems excess chloride can alter osmoregulation for fish and invertebrates, influencing biodiversity. Consequently, handling, storage, and disposal of chloride salts are governed by safety regulations to mitigate occupational health risks and environmental impact.
