Temperature determines surface conditions, producing wet pavement, frost, or black ice. Road surface conditions range from dry to wet, icy, or snow-covered, with wear, potholes, and material quality also playing a role. Maintenance activities like plowing, salting, and sanding modify grip and safety.

Visibility and lighting impact safe driving as well.
