Kjedelinker, or chain links, are the individual metal rings that form a chain. They are typically oval or rectangular loops linked in sequence, with each link closed to prevent slipping and maintain the chain’s integrity. Chains can be designed for flexibility, strength, and specific loading conditions, and some links are welded or riveted for added security in high-stress applications.

There are several common types. Plain link chains are built from uniform, interlocking links and are widely used for lifting, towing, rigging, and securing loads. Riveted chains use removable or pressed rivets to connect links, offering strong, shock-resistant performance. Welded chains have permanently fused connections for maximum strength and corrosion resistance. Decorative chains used in jewelry or design replace standard industrial links with varied shapes, finishes, or plating.

Materials vary by use. Industrial chains are typically made from carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel, chosen for strength and durability. Lighter or decorative chains may use aluminum, brass, or plated metals. In jewelry, links are often finished with gold or silver plating.

Manufacture and maintenance focus on link integrity and wear. Links are formed from wire or plate stock, then shaped and joined by riveting, welding, or bending. Regular inspection should look for elongation, stretched or cracked links, corrosion, or compromised riveting/welding. Damaged chains are usually retired or repaired to prevent failure.
