Kirjandusesõprade is an Estonian literary society founded in 1995 in Tartu. The organization’s name translates literally to “Book Friends” and reflects its core mission of fostering a community of readers and writers who share a passion for literature. The society emerged in the post‑Cold War period when Tartu was redefining its cultural life; its founders, primarily university students and local authors, sought to revive the tradition of literary salons that had been a feature of Estonian intellectual history in the early 20th century.

Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 who has an active interest in Estonian and world literature. The organization holds weekly discussion groups in the university library, publishes a quarterly newsletter that includes reviews, short stories, and essays by members, and organizes annual literary festivals in collaboration with the Tartu Literary Institute. The festivals feature readings, workshops, and panel discussions that cover topics ranging from modernist poetry to digital publishing. Kirjandusesõprade also maintains an archive of rare Estonian editions, which is available for research by scholars and members.

In addition to its cultural activities, the society provides a platform for emerging writers to have their work published in the newsletter and to receive feedback from peers. The organization’s impact is particularly noticeable in its support of Estonian language literature during the 2000s, when it organized translation workshops to bring international works into Estonian.
