Kiiritushaiguste, also known as radiation sickness or acute radiation syndrome (ARS), is a collection of temporary or permanent symptoms that occur after exposure to a high dose of ionizing radiation. The severity of the illness depends on the dose of radiation received, the type of radiation, and the duration of exposure. Common sources of such high-dose exposure include nuclear accidents, radiation therapy, and exposure to radioactive materials.

Symptoms of kiiritushaiguste typically manifest in phases. The prodromal phase, occurring within minutes to days of exposure, can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. This is followed by a latent phase where symptoms may seem to improve. The manifest illness phase is characterized by damage to specific organ systems. Hematopoietic syndrome affects the bone marrow, leading to a decrease in blood cells and increased risk of infection and bleeding. Gastrointestinal syndrome damages the digestive tract, causing severe diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. The most severe form, cardiovascular and central nervous system syndrome, occurs at extremely high doses and results in rapid incapacitation, seizures, and often death.

Treatment for kiiritushaiguste focuses on supportive care, including managing nausea and vomiting, preventing infection with antibiotics, and transfusions of blood products if bone marrow is severely damaged. In some cases, medications to stimulate white blood cell production may be used. Prognosis varies widely based on the radiation dose. Lower doses may result in full recovery, while higher doses can lead to long-term health problems or be fatal. Prevention involves minimizing exposure to radiation sources and adhering to safety protocols.
