Kiikaritähtäimet, often translated as rifle scopes, are optical sighting devices attached to firearms. Their primary purpose is to magnify the target and provide a precise aiming point, significantly improving a shooter's accuracy, especially at longer distances. The core components of a kiikaritähtäin include objective lenses that gather light, an erector system that inverts and magnifies the image, and an eyepiece through which the shooter observes.

The magnification of a kiikaritähtäin is indicated by a number, such as 4x or 9-27x. A fixed magnification scope, like 4x, offers a constant magnification. Variable magnification scopes, like 9-27x, allow the user to adjust the magnification level. The objective lens diameter, also specified by a number (e.g., 40mm), determines how much light enters the scope, affecting image brightness, particularly in low-light conditions.

Inside the scope, a reticle, or aiming point, is visible. Reticles come in various designs, from simple crosshairs to complex BDC (Ballistic Drop Compensating) patterns that account for bullet drop at different ranges. Kiikaritähtäimet are typically made of durable materials like aluminum and are often waterproof and fog-proof to withstand various environmental conditions. They are commonly used in hunting, sport shooting, and military applications.
