Keuhkoäänien refers to the sounds produced by air moving through the respiratory system during breathing. These sounds are typically assessed by a healthcare professional using a stethoscope placed on the chest or back. Normal breath sounds are often described as vesicular, which are soft, low-pitched sounds heard over most of the lung fields, with a longer inspiratory phase than expiratory phase.

Abnormal lung sounds, also known as adventitious sounds, can indicate various respiratory conditions. Crackles, also called rales, are discontinuous, popping sounds, often associated with fluid in the alveoli, as seen in pneumonia or heart failure. Wheezes are continuous, high-pitched whistling sounds, usually heard during exhalation, and are common in asthma or bronchospasm. Rhonchi are low-pitched, snoring or rattling sounds, often indicating mucus or secretions in the larger airways, and may clear with coughing, as in bronchitis. Stridor is a high-pitched, harsh sound heard during inspiration, usually indicating an upper airway obstruction. Pleural friction rubs are creaking or grating sounds that occur when the inflamed pleural surfaces rub against each other, typically heard in pleurisy. The presence, timing, and characteristics of these sounds are crucial diagnostic clues.
