ketoryhmään

Ketoryhmän is a multidisciplinary research consortium focused on ketogenic metabolism and related therapies. It coordinates investigators across universities and hospitals in Finland and the Nordic region. Its remit includes the basic physiology of ketone bodies, clinical applications of ketogenic diets, and metabolic interventions.

It was established in the early 2010s by a core team from the University of Helsinki, the University of Turku and HUS, with support from national research programs. Governance is by a scientific council and an executive committee, with a rotating chair and several thematic groups including clinical keto-therapies, metabolic signaling, and nutrition science. Affiliate researchers and partners from industry and patient organizations participate.

The group runs translational projects, clinical trials evaluating ketogenic diets in epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders; it develops biomarkers for ketone metabolism; conducts systematic reviews and meta-analyses; and offers training and public outreach through seminars and courses. It publishes in peer-reviewed journals and maintains open data initiatives.

Ketoryhmän is regarded as a platform for collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians, contributing to evidence-based guidelines and patient care practices. Debates around applicability and long-term safety of ketogenic strategies are common in public discourse, and some trials show mixed results across conditions.
