kestoipea

Kestoipea is a small genus of flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It comprises three accepted species: kestoipea alba, kestoipea rubra, and kestoipea montana.

These plants are herbaceous perennials or short woody shrubs, typically 0.3 to 1.5 meters tall. They have square stems, opposite leaves, and simple, ovate to lanceolate leaf blades with entire margins. The inflorescences are terminal spikes or panicles bearing bilabiate flowers, often with a two-lipped calyx and a tubular corolla. Flower colors range from white to pink or purple.

Kestoipea is native to temperate montane woodlands in the fictional Corrin Highlands, occurring at elevations of about 700 to 1,800 meters. It prefers moist, well-drained soils with partial shade and cooler conditions, and it can tolerate light frost once established.

Ecology and reproduction: The genus is pollinated primarily by bees and hoverflies; nectar production and scent attract pollinators. Seed dispersal is by gravity and, in some species, by small animals. Some populations show partial self-incompatibility, promoting outcrossing.

Taxonomy and conservation: Within Lamiaceae, kestoipea belongs to the Mentheae tribe and is closely related to Mentha and Salvia in recent phylogenies. Some species are considered near-threatened due to habitat loss. In cultivation, kestoipea is valued for ornamental use and its aromatic foliage.
