The surface of a brake disc can be smooth, drilled, or slotted. Drilled holes help to dissipate heat and water, while slots can help to degas the brake pad and keep the surface cleaner, both contributing to improved braking performance.

Over time, brake discs wear down due to friction with the brake pads. They can also develop surface imperfections like warping or scoring. When the disc thickness falls below a minimum specified limit, or if significant damage is present, it needs to be replaced to ensure safe and effective braking. Regular inspection and maintenance of brake discs are essential for vehicle safety.
