A kerneltípus, often translated as kernel type or kernel classification, refers to the categorization of operating system kernels based on their architectural design and how they manage system resources and hardware. The primary distinction is between monolithic kernels and microkernels, though hybrid and exokernel designs also exist.

A monolithic kernel is characterized by its large size and the fact that most operating system services, such as process management, memory management, file systems, and device drivers, run in a single, privileged address space. This approach can lead to higher performance due to direct communication between components. However, a bug in one part of a monolithic kernel can potentially crash the entire system. Linux and traditional Unix kernels are examples of monolithic kernels.

In contrast, a microkernel aims to minimize the amount of code running in kernel mode. Only the most essential services, like inter-process communication, basic memory management, and scheduling, reside in the microkernel. Other services are moved to user space as servers. This modularity can enhance reliability, as a failure in a user-space server is less likely to bring down the entire system. However, the performance overhead due to frequent context switches and message passing between user-space servers and the microkernel can be a drawback. MINIX 3 and L4 are examples of microkernels.

Hybrid kernels attempt to combine the benefits of both monolithic and microkernels. They typically run most services in kernel space for performance but may move some less critical services to user space. Windows NT and macOS kernels are often considered hybrid in nature. Exokernels represent a more radical approach, aiming to provide minimal hardware abstraction and allow applications to manage resources directly, with the exokernel acting as a security guard.
