Kellukesed, also known as bluebells, are a group of herbaceous perennial plants belonging to the genus Hyacinthoides. They are native to Europe and North Africa, with the most well-known species being the common bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta). These plants are typically found in woodlands, forests, and meadows, often forming carpets of blue flowers in the spring.

The common bluebell is characterized by its delicate, bell-shaped flowers that hang downwards from a single stem. The flowers are usually a vibrant blue color, though variations in pink and white can also occur. The leaves are long and strap-like, emerging from a bulbous root. Bluebells are known for their sweet, distinctive fragrance.

In many parts of Europe, bluebells are a protected species due to habitat loss and over-collection. Their presence is often considered an indicator of ancient woodlands. The flowering period typically occurs from April to May.

Beyond the common bluebell, other species within the Hyacinthoides genus exist, such as the Spanish bluebell (Hyacinthoides hispanica), which is also popular in gardens. Spanish bluebells are generally more robust and their flowers are more upright and often more numerous per stem. Hybridization between the two species can occur, leading to intermediate forms.

The bulbs of bluebells are poisonous and should not be ingested. Historically, the sap from the bulbs was used as a glue for fletching arrows and for sizing paper. The folklore surrounding bluebells is rich, often associating them with fairies and magical protection.
