Kauwgestel refers to the entire apparatus involved in the process of chewing, also known as mastication. This includes the teeth, jaws, jaw muscles, tongue, and salivary glands. The primary function of the kauwgestel is to break down food into smaller pieces, making it easier to swallow and digest.

The teeth are the hard structures within the mouth that perform the initial physical breakdown of food. Different types of teeth—incisors, canines, premolars, and molars—are specialized for cutting, tearing, and grinding. The jaws, specifically the mandible (lower jaw) and maxilla (upper jaw), provide the framework for the teeth and house the muscles that move them. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the mandible to the skull, allowing for the complex movements required for chewing.

The muscles of mastication, such as the masseter and temporalis, are powerful muscles that elevate and move the mandible. The tongue plays a crucial role in manipulating food within the mouth, positioning it between the teeth for efficient chewing, and then forming it into a bolus for swallowing. Salivary glands secrete saliva, which lubricates the food, aids in taste perception, and begins the chemical digestion of carbohydrates. The coordinated action of all these components ensures effective mastication.
