Katoenbewerking refers to the processes involved in transforming raw cotton fibers into usable textiles and products. The journey begins with the harvesting of cotton bolls, which are then cleaned to remove debris like seeds, leaves, and dirt. This cleaning process is often called ginning.

Following ginning, the clean cotton fibers are carded. Carding aligns the fibers into a loose, rope-like strand called a sliver. This step removes any remaining impurities and helps to prepare the fibers for spinning. The sliver is then further processed through drawing, where multiple slivers are combined and stretched to achieve a more uniform thickness and strength.

The next crucial step is spinning, where the drawn slivers are twisted to create yarn. The degree of twist influences the yarn's strength and texture. Once spun, the cotton yarn can be used for various purposes. It can be woven or knitted into fabric. Weaving involves interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles, while knitting uses interlocking loops of yarn.

After weaving or knitting, the raw cotton fabric often undergoes further treatments. These can include bleaching to achieve a white base, dyeing to impart color, and finishing processes. Finishing can involve treatments to improve properties like softness, wrinkle resistance, or water repellency. The final processed cotton can then be used to create a wide range of products, from clothing and home textiles to industrial materials.
