Katalüüsile refers to the process of catalysis, a fundamental concept in chemistry where a catalyst is used to increase the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process itself. Catalysts work by providing an alternative reaction pathway that has a lower activation energy, meaning less energy is required for the reaction to occur. This leads to a faster rate of reaction, often by several orders of magnitude, without altering the overall thermodynamics of the reaction, such as the equilibrium position or the net change in enthalpy.

There are two main types of catalysis: homogeneous and heterogeneous. In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst exists in the same phase as the reactants, typically as a liquid or gas. An example is acid catalysis in esterification reactions. In heterogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants, most commonly a solid catalyst in contact with liquid or gaseous reactants. Catalytic converters in vehicles, which use solid platinum, palladium, and rhodium to convert toxic exhaust gases into less harmful substances, are a prime example of heterogeneous catalysis.

Catalysis is a cornerstone of modern industry, enabling the efficient and economical production of a vast array of chemicals, fuels, and materials. From the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis, crucial for fertilizers, to the production of plastics and pharmaceuticals, catalytic processes are indispensable. The development of new and improved catalysts is an active area of research, aiming to enhance efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact.
