This form of catalysis is widely used in industrial processes due to the ease of separating the catalyst from the products. Biocatalysis utilizes biological molecules, primarily enzymes, as catalysts. Enzymes are highly specific and efficient, operating under mild conditions. They can be used in their native form or immobilized onto solid supports, blurring the lines between homogeneous and heterogeneous biocatalysis. Biocatalysis is increasingly important in pharmaceutical and fine chemical production. Understanding these different forms of catalysis is crucial for designing and optimizing chemical processes.
