Karkaistusmenetelmät refers to hardening processes used in metallurgy to increase the hardness and strength of metals, primarily steels. These methods involve heating the metal to a specific temperature, above its critical point, and then rapidly cooling it. This rapid cooling, known as quenching, transforms the material's microstructure into a harder phase, typically martensite.

The choice of quenching medium is crucial and depends on the material's composition and desired hardness. Common quenching media include water, brine (saltwater), oil, and air. Water and brine provide the fastest cooling rates, leading to the highest hardness but also increasing the risk of cracking and distortion. Oils offer a slower cooling rate, reducing these risks, while air cooling is suitable for some alloy steels that can harden sufficiently without severe quenching.

Different types of karkaistusmenetelmät exist. Traditional quenching involves immersing the heated part into the quenching medium. Interrupted quenching, such as martempering and austempering, involves holding the material at an intermediate temperature for a period before cooling to room temperature. This allows for more controlled transformation and can reduce residual stresses, leading to improved toughness.
