Carbocations are organic species in which a carbon atom bears a positive formal charge. These species are intermediates in many organic reactions, particularly those involving electrophilic attack on an alkene or alkyne, or substitution reactions where a leaving group departs with its bonding electrons. The positive charge is typically located on a carbon atom that is bonded to three other atoms, resulting in a trigonal planar geometry around the charged carbon. This sp2 hybridization leaves an empty p orbital perpendicular to the plane of the molecule, which can accept electron density.

Carbocations are highly reactive and transient species. Their stability is influenced by several factors. Alkyl groups attached to the positively charged carbon can donate electron density through inductive effects, stabilizing the positive charge. This is why tertiary carbocations are generally more stable than secondary, which are more stable than primary. Hyperconjugation, the delocalization of electrons from adjacent C-H or C-C sigma bonds into the empty p orbital, also contributes significantly to carbocation stability. Resonance stabilization, where the positive charge can be delocalized over multiple atoms through pi systems, is another crucial factor, as seen in allylic and benzylic carbocations.

The reactivity of carbocations makes them important in understanding reaction mechanisms. They readily react with nucleophiles, species with electron-rich centers, to form new covalent bonds. This nucleophilic attack is a key step in reactions like SN1 solvolysis and electrophilic addition to alkenes and alkynes. The study of carbocations has been fundamental to the development of organic chemistry, providing insights into reaction pathways and the factors that control chemical reactivity.
