Kapselotähystys is a medical diagnostic procedure used to visualize the gastrointestinal tract. It involves the patient swallowing a small, disposable capsule containing a camera, battery, and transmitter. As the capsule travels through the digestive system, it captures thousands of images which are wirelessly transmitted to a wearable recording device. This device is worn by the patient for approximately 8 to 12 hours. The captured images are then downloaded to a computer for a physician to review, identifying any abnormalities.

The primary indication for capsule endoscopy is the investigation of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, meaning bleeding where the source cannot be found by traditional methods like upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. It is also used to diagnose Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and to detect tumors in the small intestine. The procedure is generally painless and does not require sedation. Preparation typically involves fasting and potentially bowel cleansing. After the procedure, the patient can resume normal activities, and the capsule is naturally expelled from the body. Contraindications include known or suspected bowel obstruction.
