Kantai is a Japanese term meaning "fleet," used to denote a group of ships operated as a single naval formation. The word combines艦 (kan), meaning ship or vessel, and 隊 (tai), meaning unit or corps, and is read kantai in standard Japanese usage.

Historically, kantai has been a central concept in Japanese naval organization. In the Imperial Japanese Navy, major fleet formations were referred to as kantai, with the Combined Fleet, known in Japanese as Rengō Kantai, serving as the principal striking force during much of World War II. A prominent example is Kantai Collection (Kantai Shoukan?), commonly known as Kantai Collection or KanColle, a 2013 game and media franchise that personifies warships as character-like figures and centers on fleet-level narratives, reflecting the enduring resonance of naval fleet imagery in Japanese media.
