Kandidiasis, commonly known as a yeast infection, is a fungal infection caused by a type of yeast called Candida. Candida is a natural part of the body's flora, living on the skin and mucous membranes without causing harm. However, when the balance of microorganisms in the body is disrupted, Candida can overgrow and lead to an infection.

Several factors can contribute to candidiasis. These include weakened immune systems due to illnesses like HIV or cancer, the use of antibiotics that kill off beneficial bacteria, diabetes that can lead to higher sugar levels in bodily fluids, and hormonal changes such as those during pregnancy or with the use of birth control pills. Certain medical conditions and treatments can also increase susceptibility.

Candidiasis can affect various parts of the body. Oral thrush, a common form, appears as white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. Vulvovaginal candidiasis, often referred to as a yeast infection of the vagina, causes itching, burning, and discharge. Invasive candidiasis is a more serious form where the infection spreads into the bloodstream or internal organs, typically affecting individuals with severe health problems or compromised immunity. Symptoms vary depending on the location of the infection. Treatment usually involves antifungal medications, which can be topical or oral depending on the severity and location.
