Kananmuodossa, often translated as "chicken formation" or "V formation," is a basic tactical maneuver used by groups of birds, most notably geese, ducks, and pelicans, when flying in a V-shaped pattern. This formation is not merely for aesthetic appeal but serves distinct aerodynamic and communicative advantages for the flock.

The primary benefit of kananmuodossa is reduced aerodynamic drag for the individuals flying behind the leader. Each bird flying slightly above and to the side of the bird in front of it can take advantage of the upward airflow generated by the wingtip vortices of the preceding bird. This upward lift reduces the amount of energy the trailing birds need to expend to stay airborne, allowing them to fly longer distances with less fatigue.

Communication is also facilitated by this formation. The V-shape allows each bird to easily see and communicate with its neighbors, particularly the bird directly in front. This improves flock coordination, enabling quicker responses to predators, changes in direction, or variations in flight speed.
