kammiin

Kammiin is a coastal city-state in the eastern fringe of the continent of Eldoria. It occupies a natural crescent harbor at the mouth of the Silver Creek, a site long favored by mariners and traders. The surrounding region is temperate maritime, with rolling hills inland and tidal flats along the shore.

The name Kammiin derives from an old Kammiin word meaning "harbor’s edge," though later scripts sometimes render it as "bright harbor." The city is ethnically and linguistically diverse, hosting merchants, sailors, artisans, scholars, and refugees from nearby realms.

Kammiin traces its urban origin to seafaring clans who settled here in the early medieval era. It grew as a commercial hub, developing strong guild networks and a maritime legal tradition. The Council of Five Merchants guided policy from the 12th century onward, and the city endured sieges by pirates and rival powers before rising again in the early modern period. In recent centuries, Kammiin integrated with regional trade networks and expanded its shipyards and glass workshops.

Governance consists of a diarchy: the Guildmaster of Merchants and the Keeper of the Harbor, both elected by the merchant assembly for five-year terms. The city’s population is around 120,000, and languages include Kammiin, a regional lingua franca, and local dialects; literacy has risen with public schooling and guild libraries.

The economy centers on port trade, shipbuilding, glassmaking, and seafood. Kammiin issues a local currency, the Kammiin Mark, and hosts the annual Festival of Lamps, celebrating maritime heritage. Landmarks include the Lighthouse of the Silver Gate, Bastion Quay, and the Glasswrights’ Market.
