Kalorimetry is a scientific technique used to measure the heat transfer associated with a chemical or physical process. It operates on the principle of conservation of energy, where heat lost by a system is equal to the heat gained by its surroundings, or vice versa. The core of a calorimeter is an insulated container designed to minimize heat exchange with the external environment.

There are various types of calorimeters, each suited for different applications. Bomb calorimeters are commonly used for measuring the heat of combustion, often of fuels or food samples. Solution calorimeters are employed for reactions occurring in solution, such as acid-base neutralizations or dissolution processes. Differential scanning calorimeters (DSC) measure the difference in heat flow into a sample and a reference as a function of temperature, providing information about phase transitions, reactions, and heat capacity.

The fundamental measurement in calorimetry is the temperature change of a known mass of a substance with a known specific heat capacity. By applying the formula Q = mcΔT, where Q is the heat transfer, m is the mass, c is the specific heat capacity, and ΔT is the change in temperature, the amount of heat involved in the process can be calculated. This allows for the determination of thermodynamic properties like enthalpy changes, which are crucial for understanding reaction energetics and material behavior. Kalorimetry finds applications in diverse fields including chemistry, physics, materials science, food science, and pharmaceuticals.
