Kalciumbrist, also known as hypokalcemi, is a medical condition characterized by abnormally low levels of calcium in the blood. Calcium is a vital mineral for numerous bodily functions, including bone health, muscle contraction, nerve function, and blood clotting.

The most common causes of kalciumbrist include deficiencies in vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption, and impaired parathyroid hormone function. The parathyroid glands produce parathyroid hormone, which regulates calcium levels. Other causes can include kidney disease, certain medications like diuretics, and malabsorption disorders.

Symptoms of kalciumbrist can vary depending on the severity of the deficiency. Mild cases may be asymptomatic or present with subtle symptoms such as dry skin, brittle nails, or muscle cramps. More severe hypokalcemi can lead to muscle spasms and twitches (tetany), numbness and tingling in the extremities, confusion, and in extreme cases, seizures and cardiac arrhythmias.

Diagnosis is typically made through blood tests that measure calcium and vitamin D levels, as well as parathyroid hormone levels. The treatment of kalciumbrist depends on the underlying cause and severity. It often involves calcium and vitamin D supplementation, either orally or intravenously. Addressing any underlying medical conditions contributing to the deficiency is also crucial. Long-term management may require ongoing monitoring and adjustments to medication or dietary intake.
