Kaivosjäte, known in English as mine tailings or mining waste, refers to the byproducts of mineral extraction and processing. It is a significant environmental concern associated with mining operations worldwide. This waste material typically consists of finely ground rock and minerals that remain after the desired ore has been separated. The composition of kaivosjäte varies greatly depending on the type of ore being processed and the extraction methods employed. It can contain residual metals, chemicals used in processing, and naturally occurring radioactive materials.

The management of kaivosjäte is crucial due to its potential environmental impacts. Tailings are often stored in large impoundments called tailings dams, which are designed to contain the slurry. However, these dams can pose risks of failure, leading to catastrophic spills that can contaminate soil, surface water, and groundwater with heavy metals and other hazardous substances.
