Common types include basic continuity testers that detect opens or shorts, tone generators for locating cables, and advanced network testers that verify pinouts, pair integrity, and category compliance (Cat5e/6/6a). Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) and optical-fiber testers assess longer runs and locate faults. Some devices combine multiple functions, from handheld pocket testers to benchtop models.

Typical tests include continuity and resistance measurements, insulation resistance, impedance, and signal integrity, as well as mapping of connector pins and detection of miswiring, cross-talk, or split pairs. Advanced testers can estimate cable length, locate faults, and generate test reports.

Users operate the device by connecting it to the cable under test and selecting the appropriate test mode; many devices support RJ-45, RJ-11, USB, and fiber connectors, and provide audible beeps, LEDs, or a display.
