Kaasulääkkeet, often translated as gaseous drugs or inhalational anesthetics, are substances administered in gaseous form primarily for their anesthetic properties. They are breathed in by the patient, absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs, and then transported to the brain where they exert their central nervous system depressant effects, leading to a loss of consciousness and pain sensation. Historically, ether and nitrous oxide were among the earliest widely used kaasulääkkeet. Modern examples include halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane. These agents are carefully controlled and monitored by anesthesiologists during surgical procedures or other medical interventions requiring anesthesia. Their use allows for rapid induction and emergence from anesthesia, and their depth can be titrated by adjusting the concentration administered. While effective, kaasulääkkeet can also have side effects, including respiratory depression, cardiovascular effects, and potential for nausea and vomiting post-operatively. The choice of a specific kaasulääke depends on various factors such as the patient's medical condition, the type of surgery, and desired anesthetic profile.
