Külmuse, also known as cold fusion, is a hypothetical type of nuclear reaction that would occur at, or near, room temperature. The term was coined by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons in 1989, who claimed to have observed nuclear fusion in a simple tabletop experiment. Their work sparked significant interest and controversy in the scientific community.

The primary claim of cold fusion is that it can produce energy by combining atomic nuclei at relatively low temperatures, unlike traditional hot fusion which requires extremely high temperatures. Fleischmann and Pons reported that they had achieved this using palladium electrodes in heavy water (deuterium oxide) and an electric current.
