Külmaagendid, often translated as "cold agents" or "cooling agents," are substances used to produce or enhance cooling effects. These agents are crucial in a variety of applications, ranging from refrigeration and air conditioning to industrial processes and even personal comfort items. The primary function of a külmaagent is to absorb heat from a specific environment, thereby lowering its temperature.

In refrigeration and air conditioning systems, külmaagendid are typically refrigerants that undergo a cycle of phase changes. They absorb heat as they evaporate at low pressure and release heat as they condense at high pressure. Common examples include Freons (though many are being phased out due to environmental concerns), ammonia, and various hydrocarbon compounds.
