Külgahelaks is a Finnish term referring to the phenomenon of frost flowers. These are delicate ice formations that typically appear on plant stems in cold, humid conditions, often during late autumn or early winter. They are characterized by thin, ribbon-like ice crystals that extrude from the stem of certain plants, primarily herbaceous ones with strong vascular tissues.

The formation of külgahelaks occurs when water within the plant's stem freezes. As the water freezes, it expands, pushing liquid water out through cracks or pores in the stem's surface. This extruded water then rapidly freezes upon contact with the cold air, creating the distinctive petal-like or ribbon-like ice structures. The process requires specific conditions: temperatures near or below freezing, sufficient moisture in the plant and surrounding soil, and a relatively still atmosphere to prevent the ice formations from being immediately destroyed.

Common plants known to produce külgahelaks include dittany, wingstem, and white snakeroot. While visually striking, these ice formations are fragile and often melt quickly once the sun rises or temperatures fluctuate. The term "külgahelaks" itself combines the Finnish words "külm" (cold) and "gahelaks," which is a less common or possibly archaic term referring to a delicate or thread-like formation, aptly describing the appearance of these ice structures. They are a beautiful, albeit fleeting, manifestation of winter's early touch on the natural world.
