Käynnistysreaktiot, or ignition reactions, refer to the processes by which a combustion event is initiated. These reactions are fundamental to the operation of many engines, including internal combustion engines and jet engines, as well as in pyrotechnics and industrial processes. The primary requirement for an ignition reaction is the presence of a fuel, an oxidizer, and a source of energy to overcome the activation energy barrier.

In a typical internal combustion engine, the fuel is usually a hydrocarbon, and the oxidizer is oxygen from the air. The ignition source is often a spark plug, which provides a high-voltage electrical discharge. This discharge heats the fuel-air mixture to its ignition temperature, causing rapid oxidation and the release of energy. This energy release creates a rapidly expanding gas volume, which drives the piston.
