Jégkristályok are the crystalline forms of ice. They are a fascinating phenomenon of nature, typically forming when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes directly onto a nucleation site, such as dust particles or pollen. The precise shape and structure of a jégkristály are determined by a variety of environmental factors, most notably temperature and humidity.

The most common and recognizable form of jégkristály is the snowflake. Snowflakes are hexagonal in their symmetry, a direct result of the molecular structure of water. The water molecule, H2O, has a bent shape, and when it freezes, its hydrogen atoms form bonds with oxygen atoms of other water molecules, creating a repeating hexagonal lattice. Variations in temperature and humidity during a snowflake's descent cause different growth patterns on its six arms, leading to the incredible diversity of snowflake shapes observed.

Beyond snowflakes, jégkristályok can manifest in other forms. Ice flowers, for instance, can form on frozen surfaces like window panes when cold, moist air comes into contact with a colder surface, causing frost to grow in intricate, floral patterns. Rime ice, another type of jégkristály, forms when supercooled water droplets freeze upon contact with a surface, often creating feathery or granular deposits. These diverse crystalline structures highlight the complex interplay of physics and chemistry in the formation of ice.
