Jäälähtö is a Finnish term referring to the breaking up and movement of ice on bodies of water, particularly rivers and lakes. This phenomenon typically occurs in spring as temperatures rise and the ice begins to melt. The process can be gradual or sudden, depending on factors such as ice thickness, water current, and air temperature.

As the ice melts, it weakens and can fracture into large or small pieces. Changes in water level and flow, often caused by increased snowmelt from surrounding land, can exert pressure on the ice. This pressure, combined with the weakening from melting, leads to the ice breaking apart. The resulting ice floes then drift with the current, creating a dynamic and sometimes hazardous situation.

Jäälähtö can have significant impacts. It can block or impede navigation, potentially causing damage to boats and infrastructure like bridges and piers. Large accumulations of ice, known as ice jams, can form when floes pile up at constrictions in a riverbed or around obstacles. These jams can lead to significant water level increases upstream, causing flooding. Conversely, the release of an ice jam can cause a sudden surge of water and ice downstream. The visual spectacle of jäälähtö is also noteworthy, with large expanses of water transforming as ice breaks, moves, and eventually melts away.
