Jäähdytyssiivet, known in English as cooling fins, are extensions of a surface designed to increase the rate of heat transfer from that surface to the surrounding environment. They work by increasing the surface area available for convection and radiation. This is particularly useful for components that generate a significant amount of heat, such as electronic components, engines, and heat exchangers.

The design of cooling fins can vary greatly depending on the application. Common shapes include straight fins, pin fins, and wavy fins. The material of the fins is also important; materials with high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum or copper, are typically used to efficiently conduct heat away from the primary surface and distribute it along the length of the fin. The spacing and thickness of the fins are also critical design parameters, as they affect both the total surface area and the airflow or fluid flow between the fins. Too closely spaced fins can impede airflow, reducing efficiency, while fins that are too thin may not be structurally sound or may have too little mass to absorb and dissipate heat effectively.

Jäähdytyssiivet are a passive cooling method, meaning they do not require external power to operate, unlike active cooling systems like fans or pumps. Their effectiveness is dependent on the temperature difference between the fin and the surrounding medium, as well as the properties of the medium itself (e.g., air or liquid).
