Jäähdytysmuodostumat, also known as cooling formations, are geological features that result from the thermal contraction of rocks. When magma cools and solidifies, it shrinks. This shrinkage creates stresses within the rock, which can lead to the formation of characteristic polygonal patterns.

These patterns are most commonly observed in igneous rocks, such as basalt. The hexagonal or polygonal shapes are a result of the most efficient way to fracture under uniform stress. As the rock cools, cracks begin to form and propagate outwards. When multiple cracks meet, they tend to form angles of approximately 120 degrees, leading to the polygonal structures.

The most well-known example of cooling formations is columnar jointing. This occurs when lava flows cool rapidly, forming tall, often hexagonal columns. Famous locations exhibiting this phenomenon include the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and Devils Postpile National Monument in California. The size and regularity of the columns can vary depending on factors such as the rate of cooling, the composition of the rock, and the thickness of the lava flow.

While columnar jointing is the most dramatic manifestation, cooling formations can also appear as irregular polygonal cracks in other contexts, such as in solidified mud or even in ice. The underlying principle remains the same: thermal contraction causing stress and subsequent fracturing. These formations provide valuable insights into the cooling processes of geological materials.
