Jäykkyysmenetelmät, or stiffness matrix methods, are a fundamental approach in structural analysis. These methods are used to determine the response of a structure to applied loads by considering the stiffness of its individual components. The core idea is to relate the forces and moments acting on a structure to the displacements and rotations it undergoes.

In practice, a structure is discretized into a series of interconnected elements. For each element, a stiffness matrix is formulated, which mathematically describes the relationship between nodal forces and displacements. These element stiffness matrices are then assembled into a global stiffness matrix that represents the entire structure.

Once the global stiffness matrix is established, along with load vectors and boundary conditions (known displacements or forces), a system of linear equations can be solved. This solution yields the unknown nodal displacements and rotations throughout the structure. From these displacements, internal forces, stresses, and strains can be subsequently calculated.

The most common stiffness matrix method is the Direct Stiffness Method (DSM), also known as the displacement method. This method directly solves for displacements. Other related techniques, like the Finite Element Method (FEM), extensively utilize stiffness matrix principles to analyze complex geometries and material behaviors.
