Juurisolmut, scientifically known as root nodules, are specialized structures that develop on the roots of certain plants, primarily legumes. These nodules are formed through a symbiotic relationship between the plant and specific types of bacteria, most commonly Rhizobium species. The bacteria infect the plant's root hairs and are then transported into the root cortex, where they multiply and induce the formation of the nodule.

Inside the root nodule, the bacteria are enclosed within specialized compartments called symbiosomes. Here, they undergo a transformation into a form called bacteroids, which are responsible for carrying out nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen fixation is a vital process where atmospheric nitrogen (N2), a gas unusable by most plants, is converted into ammonia (NH3). This ammonia is then readily available for the plant to use for growth and development.

In return for the nitrogen, the plant provides the bacteria with carbohydrates produced during photosynthesis and a protected environment. This mutualistic relationship is highly beneficial, allowing legume plants to thrive in nitrogen-poor soils where other plants might struggle. The formation of root nodules is a visually distinctive feature, often appearing as small swellings or lumps on the plant's root system. The color of the nodules can vary, with healthy, actively fixing nodules often appearing pink or reddish due to the presence of a leghemoglobin molecule, which aids in oxygen transport within the nodule. This biological partnership plays a significant role in natural nutrient cycling and sustainable agriculture.
