Hair thickness, or diameter, is another common way to describe hair. Fine hair has a small diameter, feeling very thin to the touch. Medium or normal hair has a moderate diameter, and coarse hair has a large diameter, feeling thicker and often coarser.

Within these broad categories, further distinctions are made. For example, wavy hair can range from loose waves (2A) to defined waves (2B) or tight waves (2C). Curly hair is similarly graded from loose curls (3A) to tight corkscrew curls (3C). Coily hair is also classified from its pattern and density.
