A jurisconsult is a legal scholar or adviser who specializes in the interpretation and application of law. Historically, jurisconsults provided opinions on legal questions and advised rulers, magistrates, or governments. In modern usage the term often denotes a senior lawyer or scholar who offers consultative legal opinions rather than representing a client in court.

The title derives from Latin, with juris consultus meaning one consulted on law. In ancient Rome, jurisconsults were respected experts whose writings and responsa helped shape civil law and constitutional practice. Their determinations were influential even when not binding, and their work contributed to the development of later legal traditions in Europe.

In contemporary civil-law jurisdictions, jurisconsults may be university-affiliated scholars, judges, or official advisers to legislative or executive bodies. They produce formal opinions, reports, or treatises that illuminate legal questions, draft reform proposals, or guide policy. In common-law countries, the exact term is less prevalent; similar functions are performed by legal advisers, law reform commissions, or government counsel rather than by individuals titled as jurisconsults. The label can also appear in reference to historic or international-law contexts, where eminent jurists provide authoritative interpretations of complex legal issues.
