Judiciarys is a nonstandard plural form; the standard term is "the judiciary," or "the judiciaries" when referring to multiple jurisdictions. The judiciary comprises the system of courts and judges that interpret and apply laws in a country or region.

Its primary functions are to interpret statutes and constitutional provisions, resolve disputes, protect rights, and limit governmental power through judicial review where available. It serves as a check on the legislative and executive branches, helping to ensure due process and the rule of law.

Most systems organize the judiciary into tiers: trial courts, appellate courts, and a supreme or constitutional court. Some include specialized courts. Judges are appointed by various means, and tenure ranges from life to fixed terms. Independence from political influence is a core principle, with safeguards such as secure tenure and protected budgets.

Proceedings typically involve hearings, presentation of evidence, and reasoned decisions. Adversarial systems emphasize advocacy by parties; inquisitorial systems give judges a more active investigative role. Appellate courts review lower decisions for errors of law or procedure, and constitutional courts may have the power to strike down laws or interpret constitutional rights.

The judiciary operates within the separation of powers and, in many jurisdictions, interacts with international law and human rights norms. Ongoing reform efforts often address access to justice, efficiency, transparency, and the funding and modernization of court systems to improve performance and public trust.
