A job position is the occupancy of a specific role within an organization, defined by the duties, responsibilities, and reporting relationships attached to that role. It is distinct from the job title, which is the public name of the role; a single title can cover multiple positions, and a position can be held by different people over time.

A position is typically described in a job description, which states its purpose, key tasks, decision authority, and working conditions. Qualifications and skills are usually specified in a separate job specification or as part of the description. The description may also include location, hours, salary range, and, where applicable, benefits.

Job analysis, job design, and job evaluation are common governance processes used to create and maintain positions. Job analysis identifies tasks, responsibilities, required competencies, and context. Job design considers how the role fits within the organization and workflows. Job evaluation determines the relative value of the role for compensation.

Recruitment and selection revolve around the position: vacancies are posted with the position’s requirements, candidates are screened, interviewed, and selected to fill the role. Once filled, performance management, development, and succession planning are organized around the duties of the position.

Legal and ethical considerations apply to job positions, including equal employment opportunity, non-discrimination, and compliance with labor laws and safety regulations. In response to organizational change, positions may be reorganized, merged, split, or eliminated, with corresponding updates to job descriptions and staffing plans.
