Jezdnia is the driving surface of a road, designed for motor vehicle traffic. It forms the part of the road cross-section allocated to vehicle movement and is distinct from adjacent elements such as sidewalks (chodniki) or cycle paths. Depending on the road, jez-dnia may be a single carriageway or divided into separate driving surfaces by a median. Each direction typically has one or more lanes.

Jezdnia geometry and width are planned to balance safety, throughput, and speed. Typical urban lanes are narrower than those on high-speed roads; lane markings indicate individual lanes and the edges of the carriageway. On divided roads, each carriageway can be separated from the opposing carriageway by a central barrier or median. The driving surface is bounded by curbs, shoulders, or verges and is designed to accommodate the expected traffic loads and speeds.

Materials and construction: jez-dnia is usually surfaced with asphalt concrete or cement concrete, built over base and subbase layers with a subgrade underneath. Drainage is integral to prevent water accumulation. The surface is maintained with re-striping, resurfacing, and pothole repair as needed.

Maintenance and regulation: the jez-dnia is governed by national and local road design standards as well as traffic regulations. Maintenance tasks include resurfacing, repair of wear and damage, repainting lines, and winter services. The condition of the jez-dnia influences traffic safety, vehicle efficiency, and overall road performance, and it may be adapted with design changes such as additional lanes or turning lanes on aging infrastructure.
