A jernbanedepot is a railway facility used for the storage, maintenance, and servicing of rolling stock, including locomotives, passenger cars, and freight wagons. Depots may be dedicated to propulsion units, carriages, or combinations, and they provide space for lodging of trains when not in service as well as routine and major maintenance work. Typical activities include inspections, wheel maintenance and profiling, component replacement, cleaning, fueling or charging of traction batteries, and light or heavy repairs. Depots are supported by workshops, inspection pits, lifting and testing equipment, cranes, track maintenance facilities, and sometimes on-site wash plants.
