The single cell of a unicellular organism carries out all the essential life functions, including metabolism, reproduction, and response to stimuli. They can be prokaryotic, lacking a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles, as is the case with bacteria and archaea. Alternatively, they can be eukaryotic, possessing a nucleus and other specialized organelles, like most protists.

Unicellular organisms exhibit a wide range of adaptations. Some are motile, using flagella, cilia, or pseudopods to move. Others are sessile, remaining fixed in one location. Their methods of nutrition also vary; they can be autotrophic, producing their own food through photosynthesis, or heterotrophic, obtaining nutrients from external sources. Reproduction in unicellular organisms is primarily asexual, commonly through binary fission, where one cell divides into two identical daughter cells. However, some can also undergo forms of sexual reproduction. Their ability to reproduce quickly and adapt to different environments contributes to their widespread distribution and ecological significance.
