Jamresistant is a property of a communication system or device designed to maintain operation and data integrity in the presence of deliberate radio interference, or jamming. Jam resistance is sought in military, government, and critical infrastructure applications, as well as in some commercial high-value links. It does not imply invulnerability; rather, the objective is to degrade the attacker’s effectiveness while preserving essential communications.

Techniques used to achieve jam resistance include spread spectrum methods such as direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) and frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS), which spread the signal over a wider band and make the transmitter harder to jam selectively. Frequency agility—rapidly changing operating frequencies—reduces the time a jammer can affect a given link. Power control and directional antennas help place more energy toward the intended receiver and reduce leakage. Anti-jamming filters, adaptive modulation and coding, and robust error-correction schemes improve resilience to interference. Advanced systems may employ adaptive beamforming, null steering, and power reserve margins to survive higher jam levels.

Limitations and considerations: jam resistance is not equivalent to secure encryption. A determined jammer capable of wideband or sophisticated interference can still degrade links, and legal restrictions govern intentional jamming in most regions. Evaluation is typically conducted through controlled jamming tests, measuring metrics such as signal-to-jammer-plus-noise ratio, jamming-to-signal ratio, and link availability.
