The jakoketju, often translated as timing chain, is a critical component in many internal combustion engines. Its primary function is to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s). This synchronization ensures that the engine's valves open and close at the precise moments required for proper intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust strokes. Without this precise timing, the engine would not operate efficiently and could even suffer catastrophic damage.

The jakoketju is typically a metal chain composed of numerous interlocking links. It runs over sprockets, with one sprocket attached to the crankshaft and one or more sprockets attached to the camshaft(s). The relative sizes of these sprockets determine the gear ratio and thus the timing relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft. In some engines, tensioners are used to maintain optimal tension on the chain, preventing slack and ensuring smooth operation.

Compared to timing belts, which are made of rubber or composite materials, timing chains are generally more durable and can last the lifetime of the engine, provided they are properly maintained. However, they can also be heavier and noisier than belts. Over time, the links in a jakoketju can stretch, and the sprockets can wear down. If these issues are not addressed, it can lead to timing problems, reduced engine performance, and potential damage.
