Wastewater, also known as sewage, typically consists of domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, and stormwater runoff. Domestic sewage contains human waste, food scraps, and other household disposables. Industrial wastewater can contain a variety of chemicals and byproducts depending on the industry. Stormwater runoff can pick up pollutants from streets and land surfaces as it flows into the drainage system.

The wastewater system typically begins with a collection network of underground pipes that transport the wastewater to a treatment plant. In some cases, pumping stations are used to move wastewater uphill or over long distances. Once at the treatment plant, the wastewater undergoes several stages of treatment. Primary treatment involves screening to remove large solids and then sedimentation to allow heavier solids to settle out as sludge. Secondary treatment uses biological processes, such as activated sludge or trickling filters, to break down dissolved organic matter. Tertiary treatment, if implemented, further removes nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as other specific pollutants.

Treated wastewater, now called effluent, is then typically discharged into a receiving body of water, such as a river, lake, or ocean, or may be used for irrigation. The sludge removed during treatment is often processed further, for example through digestion, and can be disposed of in landfills, incinerated, or sometimes used as fertilizer. Effective management of the wastewater system is crucial for maintaining water quality and preventing the spread of diseases.
