Myositis ossificans is a rare condition characterized by the formation of bone within muscle tissue. This ossification typically occurs following trauma, such as a severe bruise or fracture, but can also arise spontaneously in some cases. The affected muscle may become painful and stiff, with a palpable mass that hardens over time.

The condition can affect various muscle groups, with the quadriceps and biceps being common sites. Myositis ossificans is broadly classified into two main types: traumatic myositis ossificans, which is more common and linked to injury, and progressive myositis ossificans, a rare genetic disorder that leads to widespread bone formation in muscles and connective tissues.

Diagnosis usually involves a combination of physical examination, X-rays, and sometimes CT scans or MRI to visualize the bone formation. Treatment focuses on managing pain and inflammation, often with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In cases of significant functional impairment, surgical removal of the bone may be considered, although there is a risk of recurrence. Physical therapy is also important to maintain range of motion and muscle strength. The prognosis varies depending on the extent and location of the ossification, as well as the underlying cause.
